The New Hybrid Industry: Fusing the Oil and Retail Market

With the growing environmental concern surrounding the oil industry, many fuel distributors have begun expanding their business to include the retail of certain goods. This has resulted in a unique, yet surprisingly popular hybrid industry wherein consumers are treated to a one-stop merchandise shop. Although the initial collaboration was first questioned with many financial and economic advisors not seeing the connection between the oil and retail markets, companies that have expanded into this industry now say that the connection is not only there, but is very strong.

The reasoning is as follows: those looking for branded motor oil (or other similar products such as biodiesel or gasoline) typically have cars. As these customers purchase new oil, they would normally pay an additional cost to have the oil changed on the spot. This leaves around 10 to 30 minutes (depending on the type of oil purchased and the level of service required for that specific vehicle) of free time for the customer. Normally, drivers would be content to use that time to read or play with their smartphone. However, this is an excellent opportunity for retailers to entertain customers with more viable (and revenue-generating) options. Progressive entrepreneurs have begun tying up with other retail companies to offer other products such as automotive parts or brake fuel.

Another brilliant opportunity, though often under-considered, is the tie-up between oil distributors and food chains. Perhaps the customer is not interested in purchasing another item for his or her car. There may also be a chance that the driver is with his or her family. A well-placed and affordable food stall could potentially see a significant return on its investment. The profits are also exponential if the food stall and the oil distributor is one and the same.
